PHD Medical’s Televisit system selected by McGill University Health Center’s Home Ventilation Program

PHD Medical’s Televisit system was selected by the National Program for Home Ventilatory Assistance, McGill University Health Centre (NPHVA-MUHC), as the technology platform for providing remote care to 200+ patients across Quebec. NPHVA provides homecare to patients who have chronic lung disease as well as neuromuscular diseases, spinal cord injuries causing respiratory muscle paralysis, kyphoscoliosis (severe curvature of the spine), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gerhigs disease) or post-polio syndrome requiring ventilatory assistance from a few hours a day to 24 hours a day. Due to these patients’ limited mobility, a team of respiratory therapists provide specialized care at the patient’s home on a regular basis.

The Televisit technology will be used to enhance these home visits with weekly telemedicine consultations by the respiratory therapists as well as medical specialists from other MUHC hospitals. 26 Televisit patient terminals will be deployed across Quebec starting in the fall of 2009.

PHD Medical’s Televisit system selected by St. Mary’s Hospital for Post-Surgical Oncology Care

PHD Medical’s Televisit system was selected by St. Mary’s Hospital and the McGill University School of Nursing for a one year research project on Post-Surgical Oncology Homecare.

The project goal is to assess the effectiveness of Telemedicine technology for delivering individually-tailored care for patients with colo-rectal cancer and to determine if tele-homecare in addition to conventional follow-up can effectively reduce the patient’s length of stay in hospital as well as their number of in-person follow-up consultations.

The Televisit technology will be integrated in conjunction with the out-patient cancer care clinic at St. Mary’s Hospital Center. The data generated in this study from the development and integration of Televisit in an out-patient clinic will be pivotal in demonstrating how a team can provide accessible support via telemedicine to patients who will likely benefit from this technology in terms of better quality of life and reduced hospital visits.

The St. Mary’s project was designed by Dr. Antonia Arnaert of the McGill University School of Nursing.

Televisit Corrections solution selected by Westchester County Department of Corrections

Westchester County Department of Corrections selected the Televisit Corrections system to reduce the need for physical visits to the jail. Televisit Corrections allows for instant and secure video conferencing between prison inmates and county agency representatives. This providess a means to reduce costs, enhance productivity and improve safety at the prison facility.

The hardened terminals and secure network chosen by Westchester County allow bail expeditors, probation officers, parole officers, and attorneys to securely communicate with an inmate directly in their housing unit from anywhere an internet connection is available.

Commissioner Joseph Spano said, “its all part of Westchester County’s efforts to use technology to save money, improve efficiency and security.”  County representatives, such as bail expeditors and probation officers, are now conducting business from their main offices and no longer have to physically visit the jail. Consequently, they benefit by reducing their transportation cost and engineering productivity gains. Moreover, the reduction of prisoner movement throughout our prison complex will greatly enhance security.”

PRESS RELEASE: PHD Medical Inc. opens a second respiratory clinic to diagnose pediatric sleep apnea in the greater Montreal area

PHD Medical, a home diagnostic and tele-medicine company, has opened its second clinic within the ENT Specialty Group, a practice of ear, nose and throat specialists affiliated with McGill University. This location in downtown Montreal compliments the first clinic at the Tiny Tots Medical Center on the West Island. “We are now responding to an unmet need, allowing us to better support our patients and referring community,” says Angela Morielli, Vice President, Respiratory division. Click here for Clinic details.

PHD Medical offers a home based diagnostic testing solution for children suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea. The service has an important healthcare impact on children & their families. Early identification of children who have obstructive sleep apnea can expedite their treatment, thus minimizing the negative consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea. Children who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea who are not treated in a timely manner may suffer from poor school performance, behavioral problems, and poor growth. In extreme cases the child may also have heart and lung problems. Dr. Robert Brouillette, a world leader in pediatric sleep medicine and the Medical Director of PHD Medical, states that “untreated obstructive sleep apnea has been proven to place an overload on the heart, and can interfere with growth, intellectual and developmental progress."

The most common nighttime sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring and difficulty breathing during sleep. According to clinical research 1, it is estimated that approximately 10% of children between the ages of two and twelve snore and the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in this patient population is reported to be between 1 and 3% 1. Based on these statistics nearly one quarter of a million children should receive testing in Canada. However, there is limited medical expertise in pediatric sleep medicine available and long waiting lists where it is does exist.

About PHD Medical:
PHD Medical Inc. designs innovative products and services to meet the unmet demand and the specific needs of the home diagnostic and tele-medicine markets in Canada and the world. Through its network of technical and clinical experts, PHD Medical provides revolutionary solutions that enhance patient care and management.

About ENT Specialty Group:
The ENT Specialty Group consists of seven highly specialized surgeons who offer a particular expertise in the specialties of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Our office is modern and fully equipped to perform several on-site procedures otherwise difficult to obtain outside of the hospital. These include biopsies, small surgical procedures under local anesthesia, and a range of intra-nasal and otologic procedures. We offer ultrasound-guided biopsies of neck masses and thyroid lesions. Detailed endoscopic examinations of the larynx with state of the art equipment are available. We also have two surgical microscopes for precise ear examination and interventions, including myringotomy and pressure equalizing tube insertions under local anesthesia. We offer a complete pediatric airway assessment with small, specialized pediatric equipment. Our patients have access to an on-site allergist and endocrinologist, in addition to access to the services of speech language pathology and audiology. PHD Medical presents the Televisit 100 System to the McGill University Health Centre

PHD Medical in conjunction with the McGill University Health Centre’s National Program for Home Ventilatory Assistance unveil the NPHVA Televisit program.

This program, designed by NPHVA with the MUHC Telehealth Department employs PHD Medical’s Televisit 100 telemedicine platform to provide specialized care to ventilatory-assisted patients in remote areas.

The demonstration, held at the Montreal Children’s Hospital consisted of a live demonstration of the Televisit 100 System, illustrating how the system will be used by NPHVA clinicians to provide follow-up care to their home-based patients in the remote regions of Quebec. The PHD Medical team demonstrated how a clinician can check the patient’s health status and also verify respirator functionality without ever leaving the hospital.
